Fast and Secure Data Redaction at Scale

The Challenge

As digital document volumes grow rapidly across industries, protecting sensitive and confidential information has become a critical business priority.

Financial institutions routinely handle documents containing sensitive personal and financial data. Companies are required to remain compliant with privacy regulations while processing these materials yet traditional redaction methods were simply not built for scale. For physical documents, redaction was done manually with markers. For digital formats, PDF and image editors were used a process that became increasingly unsustainable as business volumes grew.

A client in the financial services sector approached InferIQ with an urgent need: their redaction process had to be dramatically faster and capable of handling over 1,000 files at a time. Their existing methods were obsolete and couldn't keep up with operational demands.

According to Mordor Intelligence, the global data masking market was valued at $483.90 million in 2019 and projected to reach $1.04 billion by 2025 reflecting just how critical this challenge has become across industries.

The Solution

The InferIQ team developed Red-Ex an automated redaction system built on a custom redaction algorithm running on top of AWS Textract.

Red-Ex accepts documents in multiple formats including PDF and scanned images and allows users to select the specific types of sensitive information they want redacted directly within the interface. Once submitted, the redaction process runs automatically and the resulting document is delivered to the client's inbox.

Critically, the redaction process is one-way and irreversible ensuring 100% protection of sensitive information, with no possibility of recovery by any other software.

Red-Ex also exposes an API for seamless integration with existing client software, regardless of the technology stack making it flexible enough to plug into any document processing pipeline.

The Impact

By replacing manual redaction with Red-Ex, the client was able to process sensitive documents at a scale and speed that was simply not possible before.

Each file that previously required time-consuming manual redaction and rescanning is now processed automatically saving an estimated 10 minutes per file. At a volume of 1,000+ files, this translates to hundreds of hours saved in operational effort.

The AWS-powered infrastructure allows Red-Ex to scale automatically with workload demand, eliminating the bottleneck that had constrained the client's operations. Teams were able to redirect their time away from repetitive redaction tasks toward higher-value work.
